who loves grindin it out

Uncategorized — Brock on October 30, 2007 at 7:28 pm

i most certainly love the idea of working.  it’s been grinded into me since i was a sexton for a Presbyterian church at the age of 13.  My boss was an ex catholic priest (dubious i know, but completely harmless, at least i can block out) who did nothing but listen to NPR on Saturday afternoons, which, in my neck of the woods consists of latin reggae.  It sounded pretty rad whenever I took of my headphones that were filled with nothing but Lifetime, and Sunday Day (eh?).  But I digress.

I’ve been workin’ way too much and the devil sauce I’m bringin’ home has made the sweet sweet tunage I’ve been listenin’ to all too beautifully muddled.  I’ve love to go on about how insanely warped my Ainotamenishis s/t LP experience has been makin my toes inch at such a magnitude that would scare off the scabies thats been threatin the neighborhood, and how I’d love to scream from my porch front about how the new Wooden Shjips album has been my lead into regretably bad slumber due to the fact that it has been knockin my skull around since first spin, but I sure as shit can’t!  I’M LAMELY TIRED.  More to come soon i swear.

Alchemy and Bullshit 2CDR
PENGO MAN.
4 monsters from Rochester have got the art of mind fuckery down to a science. “Alchemy and Bullshit” is a 2 disc retro of sorts that complies their insanely hard to pin down style. I mean, its aloof in the sense that they have moved passed their 3 piece heavy drone unit that dawned the organ heavy “A Nervous Splendor” in 2001, to a 4 piece incarnation they’ve been working with as of late… This slab really does bring out the raddest sense of complete ambivalence in the most fun way possible. Heavy as shit, Harry Pussy like guitar work, bright eyed hysterical sax spurts, fast paced narcoleptic drumming, and over blown organ work is just the beginning. Similar instrumentation spans throughout both discs, but you’re hard pressed to find congruence. The first track of disc one is a seamless jointing of what seems like six of seven live shows. Its all “covers” of a genre catch all. The Stooges, Rush, the Organization, Neil Young, and Negative Approach (if you think they were just mediocre hardcore, go back to bed shit stain). They rip apart the essential elements of each song to the barest, and slap on their own sound. It’s repetitive, but totally insane. But its fun see. They take themselves out of the lame self important avenues of typical drone, and basically blend together 142 styles into one snot rocket of GROSS ROCK. Quotin’ John Schoen from a Blastitude interview last year, he shows his love for Chilean schlock director Alejandro Jodorowsky. “(Jodorowsky) treads the same fine line between mystic and bullshitter…” That line is never defined with this band. It’s psychedelic in the sense that it resists categorization. Released in December of 2005, you can still snag a copy of this at the Carbon Records website. 2 black-bottom CDRs, glossy print insert, sealed in a 6″x8″ silkscreened and spray painted chipboard mailer is what you’re going to be staring at. Keep it scummy.

filthy monkeys

sometimes you gotta dig into the dirt.  and out of the dirt you find a hovel of decrepit fun.  the fun that i’m playin with tonight is a brisbane band called xnobbqx.   tap straight into the filament of previous amazing releases from tom lax’s label siltbreeze comes an unearthed cdr from 04 dubbed “sunshine of your love.”  what the shit are these dudes on?  ok, please remove yourself from the current influx of boring noise records that have been floodin’ the market as of late (and i mean market.  dudes gotta pay rent, and shit, i’m holdin onto a couple juelz from early AM tapes, but man, every sis and her mother has been releasin’ drone filth lately.)  already a lot of shit has been spread around about these two dudes becomin’ another aussie wonderlove.  fuck ‘em.  the piss and vinegar that they bring is straight up second to none.  lay your head down on their amps and get bothered.  straight up gutter punk love.  it’s been awhile since shit’s been this free.  structure with a finger in the air to melody and harmony.  they mean business.  come hither and hear hatred. slitbreeze.com

don’t crap into a plastic bag and stick it into an unused microwave in your kitchen and leave it there for a couple weeks.  you’ll get big giant butt flies that come from the maggots born in said poop.  that is all.

los llamarada - the very next moment 7” [s-s, 2007]

Uncategorized — Brock on October 18, 2007 at 3:42 pm

Mexican trash punk anyone?  Looks like these kids finally found their way into a studio.  Their debut LP was a straight up bathroom recording, but this thing is “polished.”  Did that synth did shit out?  Its putterin’ and a mutterin’, but Los Llamarada got their hooks in the blues!  You heard smacks of it in the LP, but with sonic “clarity,” structured abounds  in “The Very Next Moment.”  Austere and flippant.  The flip side is a cover of Brenda Lee’s “Im Sorry.”  Add buzzy guitars and a french accent and you got a total bummer session.  Great 7″ to end the year right.

sox, you’re breakin ma heart

John Lee Hooker? NO SIR

So this damn Tea Bazaar venue. It’s located right at the end of the Downtown Walking Mall in C-ville, home of hackey sackin’, flaming throwin whatevers. The venue itself is small and cramped, serving up some wonderful brewnanskies and decent bowls of soup. But whoever is doing the booking has got a good head on her/his shoulders. Warmer Milks, Woods, Circle, etc. have bashed out some serious good times over the past year. Caught wind of this kind of last minute, and my job kept me up there until the shows start.

Endless Boogie has been written about in rather lofty terms. I nabbed their first lp (black lp?) and was floored from beginning to end. Allman Brothers/Starz/whatever comparisons do these bros ZERO justice. They lock heavy on the grooves and never ever let up. Live was just another beast all together. Two songs, twenty minutes a piece. The mixture of proseco and Lucifer brew hit perfectly as soon as they got down. Mark these guys as the fuckin’ chill out band of the fall season. The lead guitar lead the troops into action, backed by the riflemen rhythm section. It was enthralling and engaging all in one spin. Won’t tour again until the apocalypse. Wait for the new LP to hit on No Quarter real soon.
